Maidenschaft in the Pre-Historic Aryo-Germanic Age

Karl Maria Wiligut put forward the concept of a Maidenschaft or `society of maidens` in ancient pre-historic Germanic times[see the aforementioned essay in Secret King by Dr Stephen Edred Flowers and Michael Moynihan.]which was divided into four distinct levels and collectively were known as BURGMADIENS:

The HEXAS-Their responsibility was primarily the care and preservation of the eternal flame which was used in part for signalling purposes between burgs and these Hexas were also initiated into herbology and animal healing. They represented the lowest level of Bugmaidens.

The DRUDAS-Their responsibility was primarily to act as wise counselors but also like the Hexas they had knowledge of herb lore and used their knowledge and surgical skills for the healing of humans.

The WALAS-Their primary responsibility was the management of the Maidenschaft and had to possess all the knowledge of the two lower levels. They were repositories of clanic and tribal knowledge and had the powers of Hell-sehen[clairvoyance] and Hel-sehen[necromancy].

The ALBRUNAS-They were the highest group and like the Walas they acted as counselors but for the entire Volk.

Much of this teaching is compatable with the details found in the mysterious Frisian chronicle called the Oera Linda Book. Hermann Wirth, the first president of the Deutsches Ahnenerbe translated it into German in 1933 and this caused controversy in National Socialist circles because of the implied matriarchal nature of ancient Frisian and Germanic society. This concept is carried over into Wirth`s 1928 work Der Aufgang der Menscheit[The Rise of Mankind].

The Oera Linda Book uses very much the same terminology as Wiligut and focuses on the importance of the maintenance of the eternal flame which was used for sacred ceremonial purposes. As in other Aryan societies the sacred flame was tended by virgin priestesses and each family`s hearth was lit by this flame.
"Whenever a burgh is built, the lamp belonging to it must be lighted at the original lamp in Texland, and that can only be done by the folk-mother."

Wiligut maintains that not only were the Burgmaidens virgins but it was also preferred that wherever possible that hermaphrodites were initiated into this order of priestesses. Their exclusion from mating practices helped to limit their sexual activity and thus ensure that this abnormality was not transmitted to other generations. An interesting application of practical eugenics!

Wiligut`s use of the term Burgmaiden also corresponds with the term Burgtmaagd to be found in the Oera Linda Book. The mother of the white races to be found in Atland, the original location of this Germanic civilisations was called Frya, the daughter of Irtha[Erde, Mother Earth] and Wr-alda, a form of the All-Father. The astute reader will note the similarity of Frya with the name of the Vanadis Freyja.
The author of The Other Atlantis and Secrets of Lost Atland Robert Scrutton has this to say in The Other Atlantis[page 24]: "The ancestors of Frya`s white race may have been the tall Cro-Magnons who left evidence of their skills in Europe. Archaeological evidence suggests that Cro-Magnon man was well over six feet tall, intelligent and good-looking."
Frya was clearly Nordic in appearance: "Frya was white like the snow at sunrise, and the blue of her eyes vied with the rainbow. Beautiful Frya! Like the rays of the sun shone the locks of her hair, which were as fine as spider`webs."[Chapter II of the Oera Linda Book].

It is interesting that the second highest group were called Drudas which no doubt is related to the Celtic priestly order of Druids.Peter Berresford Ellis in his book The Druids provides evidence for the existence of female Druids and many Celtic scholars propose that the orders of Druids did in fact continue to exist in post conversion times and formed the basis of medieaval hospitals, monasteries and nunneries.

Ancient Roman writers such as Tacitus give examples of Germanic priestesses and present them as powerful figures with a great deal of political influence.
The seeress Veleda was apparently even revered almost as a divinity. Pre-christian Germanic man regarded women, especially those who were noble-born as being repositories of divine wisdom and even powerful princes and chieftains often consulted with them for advice on how to proceed in matters of peace and war. "In the days of the Divine Vespasian we saw how Veleda was long esteemed by many as a supernatural power, and they have in the past revered Aurina also, and many others: not like sycophants, though, making them gods."[Tacitus` Germania:8.2]
